Abstract

This chapter summarizes an exploratory study of relationships between adult siblings in one large family. The study used a hermeneutic approach (Glaser, 1978; Glaser & Strauss, 1967; Strauss, 1987) in an attempt to determine how adult siblings perceived and interpreted their relationships within a family context. This exploratory approach allows insights, hypotheses, and tentative conclusions about family functioning to emerge; they can be tested more rigorously in further studies employing larger samples of smaller families more typical of present and future generations.
