Abstract
Most human teratogens are first identified by physicians. This was the way that FAS was identified. In Seattle, Washington, an astute pediatric resident brought a number of unusual looking children to the attention of Drs. Ken Jones and David Smith. Because these children didn’t conform to any known medical diagnosis, Jones and Smith realized they were dealing with an as yet unreported birth defect, which they subsequently called fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) (Jones & Smith, 1973).
