Abstract

The phenomenon of drug abuse is no longer regarded as a problem restricted to populated urban areas or to certain economic, social, educational, or ethnic groups. Alcoholism, representing the major form of drug abuse in America, is responsible for a tremendous amount of human misery. In addition, a large expenditure of funds is required to deal with the social problems associated with drug abuse. The increasing awareness of the problem by all social strata has led to increased demands for a solution. The purpose of this chapter is to review behavioral change strategies used to treat drug abuse, with particular emphasis on their application to and effectiveness with black populations. Attention will also be directed toward explicating modification of treatment techniques which might enhance their effectiveness with black clients. Initially, we will discuss alcoholism and then treat other forms of drug abuse in a separate section.
