Abstract
Some nineteenth-century gardeners created living sundials. They arranged a circle of coincident indicators of the time of day by planting a clock-face of flowers, each bed blossoming at a different hour. On sunny days one could tell the time to within a half hour by glancing at the garden (Luce, 1970, p. 120).
