Abstract
What do we know about autism? What hard scientific facts can we all agree are correct? Do we know if it is a single disease or a syndrome? Is it caused by emotional stress; or by exogenous agents, such as viruses; or by endogenous factors, such as biochemical abnormalities?
What do we really know about the etiology of autism? At this time, we know very little indeed. The striking lack of consensus regarding the pathogenesis of autistic symptoms suggests that the right questions regarding the anatomical, electrophysiological, and biochemical substratum of the symptoms have not yet been asked. The study reported here is an initial attempt to formulate such questions.
