Abstract

Numerous theoretical writings have argued that counselor empathy is important to successful counseling/psychotherapy. Chapter 1 discusses some of the issues concerning this point. Regardless of whether the literature documents that empathy is crucial to positive counseling outcomes, there are still these interesting empirical questions: What type and how much trait empathy do counselors have? Can their empathy be separated into components? Thus, the primary purpose of the study that is reported in this chapter was to seek answers to these questions.
