Abstract

Reports in 1948 and 1949 of series of young patients undergoing closed transatrial mitral commissurotomy (Harken et al. 1948, Bailey 1949), later modified to a transventricular approach (Logan and Turner 1959), were in time followed by documentation of successful open-heart procedures on older patients (Spencer et al. 1964, Bowles et al. 1966, Ahmad and Starr 1969). The intervening 20 years saw the development of cardiopulmonary bypass in 1954 (Gibbon 1954), the replacement of diseased aortic and mitral valves by ball-valve prostheses in 1960 (Harken et al. 1960, Starr and Edwards 1961), the use of homografts in 1962 (Ross 1962), and the beginnings of direct surgical treatment for coronary artery disease in 1964 (Effler et al. 1964). The latter has now been extended to include surgical treatment for the complications of myocardial infarction.
