Cardiac Arrhythmias in the Aged

  • Chapter
Cardiology in Old Age

Abstract

Cardiac arrhythmias are not unique to the aged, but their appearance and greater frequency in the aged present special problems, because older people have greater impairment of physiological reserve and altered pharmacological response to drugs as a result of the aging process and the concurrent multiple diseases of the heart and other organs. This chapter highlights significant aspects of cardiac arrhythmias in the elderly and summarizes the newer advances in our understanding of their genesis and treatment.
