Cardiac Glycosides

  • Chapter
Cardiology in Old Age

Abstract

The cardiac glycosides are the active principles of the plants Digitalis purpurea, from which we obtain digitoxin, gitoxin, and gitalin, and Digitalis lanata, which yields digoxin. Digoxin is a degradation product of acetyl-digoxin (Lanatoside C). All the glycosides break down to form combinations of sugars with genins (sterol derivates), or aglycones. Glycosides from Strophanthus (acetylstrophanthidin, ouabain) are poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, but may be prepared as pure crystalline substances and given by injection.
