Abstract

The term “pulmonary heart disease” (PHD) is often used as synonymous with the World Health Organization’s (1961) definition of cor pulmonale:

Hypertrophy of the right ventricle resulting from disease affecting the function and/or the structure of the lung, except when these alterations are the result of diseases that primarily affect the left side of the heart, or of congenital heart disease.
