Abstract

Several myths characterized the literature on childhood depression: (1) if depression exists in children, it is rare or occurs in “masked” form; (2) depression in youth is a transitory developmental phenomenon; and (3) childhood depression reflects a normal developmental stage. Clinical and empirical observations counter these myths, suggesting that youth depression is a major problem that interferes with development across functional domains.
