Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of basic principles of prevention science and its relevance to the field of developmental psychopathology. The intellectual overlap between these two interdisciplinary sciences has become increasingly apparent over the past two decades. Prevention scientists now clearly recognize the central importance of developmental psychopathology research in the conceptualization, implementation, and evaluation of intervention strategies (Coie et al., 1993; Mrazek & Haggerty, 1994). From this perspective, the field of developmental psychopathology might be considered to be an essential domain of research within prevention science.
