Abstract

Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a relatively recent entry in the official psychiatric nosology, the association between exposure to extreme events and the subsequent appearance of psychiatric symptoms has not gone unnoticed historically. For example, Saigh (1991) reported that the seventeenth-century diary of Samuel Pepys, a survivor of the Great Fire of London, includes vivid descriptions of powerful intrusive recollections, nightmares, and sleep disturbance related to the fire.
