Abstract
Anxiety disorders encompass what is probably the most diverse group of psychopathological problems. Included among the anxiety disorders are such behaviors as repetitive hand washing, ritualizing, unexpected and apparently inexplicable bursts of panic, and an inability to eat or drink in front of other people. Not only do the anxiety disorders include a wide array of features, but the intensity of the disorders can also vary tremendously. They can range from relatively “normal” features such as worrying about the bills to extremely debilitating problems such as a total inability to leave home. Yet, this seemingly diverse group of disorders all share a single, basic, common feature—anxiety. All of the seemingly bizarre thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in these disorders center around and are motivated by feelings of fear and anxiety.
