Children of Parents with Intellectual Disabilities

  • Chapter
The Effects of Parental Dysfunction on Children

Abstract

As society moves towards supporting full inclusion of people with disabilities, questions are raised about parenting rights and competencies, and the impact of parental disabilities on offspring. This chapter reviews the current state of knowledge on the development of children raised by parents with intellectual disabilities and the efficacy of child- and parent-focused interventions. First, a description of parents with intellectual disabilities is provided.

My mother loved me. I know that emphatically, down in the deepest recesses of my being. I do not always give her love the respect it deserves—she is retarded—a priori for me, it devalues most of what she gave me (Ronai,1997, p.420).
