Abstract

Millions of American children and their families cope with physical handicaps, deformities, and chronic illnesses each year. In fact, it has been estimated that fully 10% of children experience a serious, chronic health problem or handicap (Pless, 1968). Beyond the physical demands such problems entail, children’s psychological adjustments to rigorous treatment regimens, prolonged uncertainties, a diminished quality of life, educational obstacles, and recurrent disruptions of family and peer relations are important challenges to the mental health and pediatric systems (Haggerty, Roghmann, & Pless, 1975).
