Abstract

Formal thought disorder is one of the primary inclusionary criteria for the diagnosis of schizophrenia in the third edition (DSM-III; 1980) and the revised third edition (DSM-III-R; 1987) of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. A DSM-III diagnosis of formal thought disorder is based on the presence of illogical thinking, loose associations, incoherence, and poverty of content of speech. The DSM-III-R, however, limits the formal-thought-disorder criteria to incoherence or marked loosening of associations.
