Abstract

Language is the predominant means by which we interact with our environment. Through language we are able not only to communicate and socialize with those around us but also to learn and internalize the values, customs, and rules of society. The period of initial language development usually occurs so naturally and smoothly that it is frequently taken for granted. Indeed, by the age of 2 to 3 years, the average child has a vocabulary of 250–450 words and understands up to 900 words (McKirdy, 1985). However, the development of speech and language, which occurs through the interaction between a neurophysiological substrate and a number of psychological and environmental processes, is one of the most complex tasks the human organism must master. Since adequate language development is so vital to the adaptive socialization of the young child, it is not surprising that delays or deficiencies in the development of speech and language in children have been associated with behavioral, emotional, and social disturbances in this population (Baker & Cantwell, 1985; Cantwell & Baker, 1977; Rutter, Graham, & Yule, 1970; Rutter & Martin, 1972).
