Psychological Aspects of Diabetes Mellitus in Children

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disease of childhood. Many children with diabetes have disease-related problems (e.g., family conflict over regimen adherence, peer relationship difficulties) that are best understood and approached from a psychological perspective. Effective treatment, therefore, requires consideration of psychological and behavioral factors, as well as biomedical factors (Drash, 1981; Fisher, Delamater, Bertelson, & Kirkley, 1982; Hamburg, Lipsett, Inoff, & Drash, 1980). In recent years, as the psychological aspects of childhood diabetes have been better understood, psychologists have played an increasingly important role in diabetes care.
