Abstract
Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is an extraordinary affliction of human behavior. SIB refers to repetitive acts of physical violence directed against oneself. It occurs most commonly in mentally retarded people, about 8% to 14% of those who reside in institutions (Schroeder et al., 1980), and probably an equal number of retarded people who live in community-based facilities (Phillips, 1988).
