Abstract
Chapters 8 and 9 explored possible associations between patterns of lateral preference and variations in cognitive abilities. We looked at various clinical groups, such as retardates, and we compared the top and the bottom of a distribution of typical cognitive abilities. Our emphasis was on observed or inferred pathologies, guided by the presumption that variations in the distribution of lateral preferences away from the dextral, consistent, and congruent norm are indicators of such pathological conditions. In this chapter we will explore the relationship between lateral preferences and a variety of cognitive skills within the average range of abilities. This is a natural next step, but it does involve a shift in emphasis. We are moving away from the pathological approach and into the realm of individual differences.
