Integration, Emergence, and the Structure of Scientific Progress

Commentary on Thomas E. Schacht

  • Chapter
Psychoanalytic Therapy and Behavior Therapy

Abstract

I enjoyed reading Schacht’s chapter and commentaries on our diverse approaches to the issue of integration among the psychotherapies. As some-one not infrequently seduced by what Lewis Thomas (1979) calls “transcendental metaworry,” I also found myself fascinated with Schacht’s analysis of metatheoretical issues and the problems of communication— let alone “unit analysis”—when competing paradigms and perspectives are being considered.
