Historical Perspective on the Integration of Psychoanalytic Therapy and Behavioral Therapy

  • Chapter
Psychoanalytic Therapy and Behavior Therapy

Abstract

Until 10 years ago, the idea of an integration between psychoanalytic and behavioral therapies was viewed by most with either disinterest or disdain, although a number of publications had appeared on this topic over a 50- year period. From the early 1970s to the present, there has been a marked acceleration of interest that is reflected in a dramatic increase in the number of books, conference papers, and articles on this theme. However, the earlier writings did not form a truly cumulative progression of thought but usually consisted of relatively isolated attempts to deal with limited aspects of this complex issue. Some of these earlier papers have now been anthologized in a book edited by Marmor and Woods (1980).
