Abstract

One of the most significant changes taking place today is the increase in life expectancy. People are living longer, healthier lives than ever before in human history. Average life expectancy has increased from 47 years in 1900, to 74 years in 1980 (National Center for Health Statistics). At the turn of the century, 3% of the population was 65 and over. Now, 11% of the population lives past the period officially designated as old age. This demographic shift presents one of the great challenges of our era. And it presents a special challenge to psychotherapists to whom more and more of an increasing middle-aged population is turning for help in improving their life situations.
