Abstract

Cirrhosis of the liver ranks as the third to fifth leading cause of death in the United States (Galambos, 1979; Lieber and Leo, 1982). At autopsy, based on Victor’s (1979) seminal study of 3,548 serial postmortem cases, approximately eight percent of individuals have demonstrable neuropathological evidence of hepatic encephalopathy.
