Abstract
In 1987, I celebrated my 40th anniversary as a student of inductions of recoveries of functions after injuries to the central nervous system. I think I know a fair amount about it. At least I have had a lot of practice with the subject and have only infrequently succumbed to temptations to give it up and study something else. I believe that I have come to some significant conclusions and propose in this discussion to say what they were and how they were finally arrived at. Then I contrast them with the views of other workers in our vineyard and do that by giving my reactions to statements that were made in a recent review of research on the neural mechanisms of memory.
