Abstract

The concept of using electrical stimulation in medical therapy is not new, predating even the birth of Christ. A number of references are found in early writings concerning the use of electricity for therapy, including electric eels and other species with electric organs. Ancient physicians used electric discharges from the black torpedo fish for the treatment of arthritis, headaches, and other types of disorders. However, these early therapies were not very well understood.
