Abstract
In the present chapter we begin to explore in detail the social norms that help constitute anger. And, appropriately enough, we begin at the beginning, that is, with an analysis of historical teachings on anger. Our purpose is not to trace the history of ideas regarding anger; it is rather to examine, through the eyes of leading historical figures, certain issues that continue to be of significance today.
