Abstract
The present chapter offers a general introduction to item response theory as a measurement model, with a discussion of the sources of random variation in this model. Next, the Rasch model is briefly introduced. Finally, an outline of the subsequent chapters is presented. The chapter emphasizes issues of interpretation; formal definitions are often postponed until later chapters.
