Abstract
The last chapter was devoted to a detailed examination of one of the major metaphors of emotion, namely, EMOTION IS A FLUID IN A CONTAINER, and we saw how that metaphor has its theoretical counterpart in Freudian (psychoanalytic) theories of emotion. The present chapter proceeds along similar lines, but the aim is broader. Specifically, we illustrate how psychological theories of diverse orientation (e.g., behaviorist, psychophysiological, biological) accrue some of their intuitive appeal as extensions of common metaphorical expressions.
