Abstract
This chapter describes the psychological treatment of adults with ADHD and explains similarities and differences of coaching and cognitive behavior therapy. Coaching can be delivered by any mental health care professional who understands the basic elements that are needed to support adults with ADHD. Coaching can be provided to the individual or in groups. Much attention is paid to how to motivate the patient for his or her own treatment goals. Many practical tips and tricks are given on how to enable patients with ADHD to set goals, to learn to plan, and to diminish distractibility and procrastination. Descriptions of characteristics of patients as well as coaches may help recognize certain patterns of communication in therapeutic relationships.
