Abstract

The posterior vaginal wall prolapses when visceral contents herniate through the “fascia” or fibro- muscular posterior wall of the vagina or through a disruption of these fascial attachments to the uterosacral-cardinal ligament complex, levator fascia, or perineal body. Herniation of the rectum is called a rectocele (Fig. 14.1); herniation of peritoneal contents may be called a culdocele, enterocele, peritoneocele, or sigmoidocele, depending on the contents of the hernia sac.
