Abstract
In this chapter we examine the dynamics of parent-child and stepparent-child relationships. Our primary interests center on relational processes—the development of step-relationships during stepfamily formation, the maintenance of ongoing genetic or adoptive parent-child relationships throughout the stepfamily’s existence, and the maintenance of stepparent-stepchild relationships in established stepfamilies (Coleman & Ganong, 1995). In addition, we are interested in changes in relationships that occur over time and how those changes are brought about.
