Abstract

Medicine has traveled a long and illustrious path over the past millennia, beginning with the first instance when one of our long-forgotten ancestors noticed that a sick or injured person recovered following some earnest appeal to the spirits of nature and culminating in the recent major milestone of the mapping of the human genome. This chapter will take us along that trail as we look in on the lives of the “Great Doctors,” the heroes of medical history. As your guide, I will point out only what I believe to be the most significant highlights. The real purpose of this chapter is not to make you a medical historian, but to put medical history in perspective so that the 12 chapters of this book make sense in the context of our heritage.
