6. Categoriale classificatie, epidemiologie en comorbiditeit

Samenvatting

Persoonljkheidsstoornissen mogen zich sinds de introductie van de DSM-III in 1980 in gestaag toenemende aandacht verheugen, zowel in de klinische praktijk als in het wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De problemen die gepresenteerd worden door patiënten met persoonlijkheidsstoornissen zijn veelal complex en vormen een uitdaging voor de clinicus. Eerst komen in dit hoofdstuk de definitie en de vigerende classificatiesystemen van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen aan de orde. Na een beschrijving van de criteria waaraan voldaan moet zijn voor een diagnose persoonlijkheidsstoornis, wordt ingegaan op de voor- en nadelen van de classificatie van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen door middel van een categoriaal systeem. Vervolgens komt de prevalentie van persoonlijkheidsstoornissen aan de orde, zowel in de algemene bevolking als in patiëntenpopulaties. Ten slotte worden de comorbiditeit tussen verschillende persoonlijkheidsstoornissen en de comorbiditeit tussen persoonlijkheidsstoornissen en andere psychische stoornissen belicht.
