The professional organization of health provision no longer reflects the changing patient and population health needs and problems caused by the growing number of complex illnesses. The existing configuration is dysfunctional as health provision is overly specialised and fragmented. Health provision is divided into numerous “single-condition” professions, which made sense when patients primarily suffered from single diseases that were treatable within the boundaries of one profession. However, a growing number of patients suffer from multi-morbidity which would lead a charge for another configuration of health professions composed of more ‘integrative’ or generalist professions that are more focused on prevention. Capacity planning could contribute towards this desired innovation in the health workforce by modelling the need of these non-existent professionals. In response to this vision, representatives of key stakeholders provide their opinions and visions concerning the idea of getting more generalists and prevention focused health professions and the potential stimulating role of capacity planning.
