In The Impact of Immigration on Children’s Development, editor Cynthia Garcia Coll seeks to provide insight into how the worldwide phenomenon of immigration influences children’s development as they attempt to navigate a world that not only offers them dual sets of often conflicting cultural values and traditions but also frequently regards them as part of immigrant populations struggling and failing to adapt to the new cultures and economies they face upon arriving. In doing so, she seeks to highlight the commonalities of the experience of immigrant children and to emphasize the factors that make the experiences of individual immigrant children unique. Thus, the editor brings together research and perspectives from various countries to explore both the global and the local. However, while paying tribute to the unique experiences of individual immigrant children, two themes reverberate throughout this volume: an acknowledgement that policies are enacted by adults, often for adults, and a desire to increase awareness of the unique impact immigration has on children’s development. …
