Samenvatting

Op verschillende plaatsen in de buikwand kunnen defecten (breuken) ontstaan in de fascie (bindweefsellaag). Deze fascie zorgt voor de stevigheid van de buikwand en als er een defect ontstaat presenteert zich dat bijna altijd als een zwelling ter plaatse. Een liesbreuk (hernia inguinalis) is een veelvoorkomende aandoening vooral bij mannen, en ontstaat doordat er een defect is in de buikwand ter hoogte van het lieskanaal. Een liesbreuk presenteert zich als een reponibele zwelling die gepaard kan gaan met pijnklachten. Een littekenbreuk (hernia cicatricalis) kan ontstaan na een operatie in de buik. Een liesbreuk of littekenbreuk gaat nooit vanzelf over en behoeft indien er klachten zijn operatief herstel. Dit gebeurt met een kunststof mat (mesh), die gebruikt wordt om het defect in de buikwand te verstevigen. Bij een grote littekenbreuk kan het noodzakelijk zijn een verschuivingsplastiek uit te voeren. Andere veelvoorkomende buikwandbreuken zijn dijbreuk (hernia femoralis), navelbreuk (hernia umbilicalis/hernia paraumbilicalis) en epigastrische breuk (hernia epigastrica).
