Inleiding

Blaaskanker is een relatief veelvoorkomende vorm van kanker. In Nederland wordt de diagnose ongeveer 4600 keer per jaar gesteld. Een huisarts met een gemiddelde praktijk van ongeveer 2350 patiënten zal dus ongeveer eens in de anderhalf jaar een patiënt zien bij wie blaaskanker wordt vastgesteld. Blaaskanker komt bij mannen ongeveer viermaal zo vaak voor als bij vrouwen. De meeste mensen bij wie de diagnose gesteld wordt, zijn ouder dan 60 jaar.
