8. Biologische interventies: farmacotherapie en elektroconvulsietherapie

Samenvatting

Biologische interventies die gericht zijn op de directe vermindering van acuut suïcidaal gedrag berusten op beïnvloeding van verwardheid, angst, agitatie of een verstoord slaappatroon. Interventies die suïcidaal gedrag op langere termijn kunnen verminderen, zijn onderzocht bij uiteenlopende psychiatrische stoornissen. Effectieve behandeling van deze stoornissen kan zodoende suïcides voorkomen. Slechts van enkele psychofarmaca is een direct of acuut effect tegen suïcidaliteit aangetoond. Lithiumtherapie blijkt effectief tegen suïcidaal gedrag bij stemmingsstoornissen en clozapine bij patiënten met een schizofrene stoornis. Bij suïcidale patiënten met een ernstige depressie kan met elektroconvulsietherapie een snelle reductie van suïcidaal gedrag worden bewerkstelligd. Ook bij patiënten met een persoonlijkheidsstoornis kunnen farmacotherapeutische interventies een plaats hebben binnen het behandelaanbod. In alle gevallen dient farmacotherapie ingebed te zijn in een breder behandelingsplan.
