Samenvatting

De bijnier is een dubbelzijdig aangelegd orgaan dat bestaat uit schors en merg. Het bijniermerg bestaat uit chroomaffiene cellen die in staat zijn catecholaminen (stresshormonen) te secerneren. De bijnierschors secerneert glucocorticoïden, mineralocorticoïden en androgenen. De bijnieren bevinden zich in de retroperitoneale ruimte, veelal craniomediaal van de nieren. In dit hoofdstuk worden zowel benigne als maligne afwijkingen besproken die een chirurgische behandeling behoeven. Naast de diagnostische work-up komt ook de perioperatieve zorg aan bod. Ten slotte worden de verschillende operatieve technieken alsmede mogelijke complicaties beschreven.
