Bewegen richting flexibiliteit met Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Samenvatting

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is een relatief nieuwe therapievorm die gebaseerd is op de gedragsanalyse, met name de Relational Frame Theory (RFT). ACT is onderdeel van de ‘derde generatie cognitieve gedragstherapieën’. Deze nieuwe golf van therapieën gaat uit van het idee dat pijn een basiskenmerk is van het menselijk bestaan. Zo baseert ACT zich op de aanname van destructieve normaliteit; het idee dat gewone menselijke psychologische processen op zichzelf al kunnen leiden tot extreem disfunctionele resultaten en ongebruikelijke pathologische processen. Aan de hand van een therapeutische training worden de zes sleutelprocessen van een ACT-behandeling beschreven. Het empirische deel betreft een verkennend onderzoek naar de effecten van deze training. De mate van vermijding en klachtenreductie werden hierbij onderzocht. Tot slot wordt advies voor vervolgonderzoek gepresenteerd en wordt verwezen naar de Flexibiliteits Index Test (FIT), die ontwikkeld wordt om meer inzicht te krijgen in de zes kernprocessen die onderwerp zijn van een ACT-behandeling.
