In dit overzichtsartikel bespreken we welk verband er bestaat tussen artrose en fysieke activiteit, en mogelijke achterliggende mechanismen. Het blijkt dat bewegen, vanuit diverse oogpunten, gunstige effecten heeft op de gewrichten en dat slechts extreme belastingen, zoals bij topsport of bij fysiek zwaar werk, en door sport opgelopen gewrichtsletsels het risico op het ontstaan van artrose duidelijk verhogen. Ook bij een reeds door artrose aangedaan gewricht blijkt bewegen gunstig te zijn.
