Behandeling van dentofaciale afwijkingen

Samenvatting

De behandeling van patiënten met een dentofaciale afwijking betreft de evaluatie en behandeling van vele soorten occlusale en skeletaandoeningen. Deze afwijkingen kunnen het gevolg zijn van abnormale groei van de kaakbeenderen en vereisen gewoonlijk behandeling door algemeen tandartsen, tandprothetici, parodontologen, orthodontisten en mond-, kaak- en aangezichtschirurgen.
Chirurgische ingrepen om de orodentofaciale functie te verbeteren komen steeds meer voor. Patiënten van alle leeftijden zijn geïnteresseerd in behandelingen om abnormale tand- en kaakrelaties te verbeteren, zoals afwijkingen tussen onder- en bovenkaak, te ver naar achteren liggende onderkaak en kin met vaak als gevolg een slaapapnoe, afwezigheid van voldoende kinprojectie, etc.
Voor deze afwijkingen is het nodig dat alle beoefenaars die betrokken zijn bij de patiëntenzorg samenwerken in een multidisciplinair team om tot een passende behandeling te komen. Deze sequentiële, teambenadering levert de meest bevredigende resultaten op.
