Axonale schade bij multiple sclerose: oorzaken en biologische markerstoffen

Abstract

Multiple sclerose (ms) is een chronische ziekte van het centraal zenuwstelsel. De prevalentie in Noord-Europa is 1:1000 en zij komt tweemaal zo vaak bij vrouwen voor als bij mannen. Er zijn verschillende klinische subgroepen te onderscheiden binnen ms. Het relapsing-remitting (rr-ms) subtype kenmerkt zich door aanvallen (Schubs) afgewisseld met perioden van bijna volledig herstel. Bij ongeveer 80% van de ms-patiënten begint de ziekte met dit subtype. Uiteindelijk ontwikkelt de ziekte zich na een fase van rr-ms vaak in een fase van secundair progressieve ms (sp-ms). In deze fase neemt de klinische disfunctie geleidelijk toe. Een derde subtype is de primair progressieve (pp-ms) vorm, waarbij patiënten vanaf het begin van de ziekte een geleidelijke klinische achteruitgang hebben zonder Schubs.
