Automutilatie bij jongeren

Abstract

Automutilatie bij jongeren is de uitkomst van een oorzakelijke keten waarin nare of traumatische ervaringen, een negatief zelfbeeld en borderline karakterkenmerken belangrijke schakels zijn. Er bestaat een samenhang met diverse vormen van psychopathologie, aan automutilatie kleven verslavende aspecten en het verkeren in een groep van jongeren met automutilatie kan erg bekrachtigend op het gedrag werken. In de behandeling van automutilatie speelt de dialectische gedragstherapie volgens Linehan (1993) een belangrijke rol. Ook algemene tips hoe ermee om te gaan, die grotendeels door de patiëntenorganisaties zijn opgesteld, zijn van groot nut. Na een bespreking van theorieën over de achtergronden en empirisch onderzoek naar automutilatie bij normaal begaafde jongeren volgen richtlijnen voor de ambulante en klinische behandeling van het verschijnsel automutilatie, geïllustreerd met een casus.
