15. Autismespectrumstoornissen

Samenvatting

Autismespectrumstoornissen worden gekarakteriseerd door beperkingen in de sociale communicatie en interactie, rigide en repetitieve gedragspatronen of interesses, welke niet verklaard kunnen worden door een verstandelijke beperking of algemene ontwikkelingsachterstand. Naast de aanwezigheid van deze gedragscomponenten wordt bij 50–80 % van de mensen met een autismespectrumstoornis een verscheidenheid aan slaapstoornissen gezien. Bij deze slaapproblemen spelen zowel genetische, biologische als gedragsmatige factoren vanuit het autisme een rol. Slaapproblemen verergeren de kernsymptomen van het autisme en op de lange termijn de morbiditeit. Tevens zijn ze van grote invloed op het dagelijks functioneren van de persoon met autisme en diens omgeving. Vanwege het frequent gecombineerd voorkomen moet er binnen de psychiatrie meer aandacht zijn voor de combinatie autisme en slaapstoornissen.
