3. Autisme in het licht van het biopsychosociaal model

Samenvatting

In dit hoofdstuk beschouwen we autisme in het licht van het biopsychosociaal model voor functioneren, beschreven door George Engel in de jaren zeventig. Het begeleiden van kinderen met autisme vraagt om een brede blik waarin oog is voor neurobiologische factoren, cognitieve factoren, de ontwikkelingsfase waarin het kind zich bevindt en de situatie waarin een kind opgroeit. In dit hoofdstuk beschrijven we hoe symptomen van mensen met autisme verklaard kunnen worden vanuit genetische factoren, biochemische en fysiologische processen in de hersenen. Deze processen leiden tot informatieverwerkingsproblemen die we beschouwen vanuit verschillende psychologische theorieën. Ook belichten we het ontwikkelingsperspectief door belangrijke ontwikkelingstaken voor kinderen van 0–12 jaar te beschrijven en te belichten op welke manier de ontwikkeling van kinderen met autisme kan afwijken. Ten slotte beschouwen we autisme vanuit orthopedagogisch perspectief, waarbij we kijken naar de bredere sociale context waarin een kind met autisme functioneert.
