2. Autisme: een concept in beweging

Samenvatting

Mensen met autisme hebben moeite om informatie te filteren, te integreren, en van betekenis te voorzien. Dit leidt onder andere tot beperkingen op het gebied van sociale interactie en communicatie en een verminderde flexibiliteit in denken en handelen. In dit hoofdstuk komen aan de orde: criteria die een classificatie autismespectrumstoornis (ASS) rechtvaardigen, de prevalentie en het beloop van de stoornis, en aspecten als differentiële diagnose en comorbiditeit. In het hoofdstuk wordt nadrukkelijk stilgestaan bij mogelijke genderverschillen en autisme; autisme wordt bij meisjes geregeld niet of pas laat herkend, vaak met secundaire problematiek en/of misdiagnoses tot gevolg. Vroege herkenning is daarom ook bij deze groep van groot belang.
