Inleiding

Het ASD is de meest voorkomende AHA op volwassen leeftijd. Het wordt bovendien vaak laat ontdekt, omdat een ASD gedurende de kinderleeftijd in veel gevallen geen klachten of symptomen veroorzaakt. Het relatief zachte ejectiegeruis over de pulmonalisklep wordt bij kinderen vaak niet gehoord of als onschuldig fysiologisch geruis geduid. Op volwassen leeftijd kunnen complicaties, zoals ritmestoornissen of een paradoxe embolie , maar ook een routinematig cardiaal onderzoek de diagnose aan het licht brengen. Voor een deel omdat een ASD vaak pas op volwassen leeftijd ontdekt wordt, maar ook omdat de prevalentie van andere AHA afneemt op oudere leeftijd (door overlijden, spontaan sluiten van een VSD), is de prevalentie van een ASD bij volwassenen hoger dan bij kinderen. In de landelijke registratie van patiënten met een AHA (CONCOR) in Nederland heeft 16% van alle geïncludeerde volwassen patiënten een ASD.
